The Life of Tabassum

Among her many roles, Tabassum was a popular YouTuber, talk show presenter, and actor in India. It was in 1947 that she first appeared on screen as Baby Tabassum, a moniker she adopted for her acting career as a youngster. As Kiran Bala Sachdev, Tabassum entered the world on July 9, 1944, and left it on November 18, 2022. After that, she went into the television industry, where she hosted Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan, the first-ever television chat show in India. The show ran on Doordarshan, India’s national broadcaster, from 1972 to 1993, and she conducted interviews with well-known actors, directors, and producers during that time.

Origins and upbringing

Tabassum Sachdev was born in Mumbai, India in 1944 to independence fighter Ayodhyanath Sachdev and liberation fighter, journalist, and novelist Asghari Begum. Both of Tabassum’s parents were leaders in the fight for India’s freedom. Due to her father’s religious convictions, her mother wanted to maintain Kiran Bala as her name, but he gave her the name Tabassum. For her father’s sake, her mother acted this way. The legal name on her paperwork before she got married was Kiran Bala Sachdev.

Career

Tabassum’s career began with her role as a child actress in the film Nargis (1947) and continued with her leading roles in the films Mera Suhaag (1947), Manjhdhar (1947), and Bari Behen (1947). (1949). A few years later, under Nitin Bose’s direction, she played a young Nargis in the film Deedar (1951). Lata Mangeshkar and Shamshad Begum sang a song about her, Bachpan Ke Din Bhula Na Dena, which became a huge success. She had a supporting role in Vijay Bhatt’s groundbreaking film Baiju Bawra (1952), released the following year. When she was younger, she performed the part of Meena Kumari in this film. She also appeared with Asha Parekh and Joy Mukherjee in the hit film Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon. The video for the beautiful song “Aji qibla mohtarma” included her as well. After taking some time off from acting, she came back to the film business and quickly found employment in character parts.

Tabassum’s program, named “Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan,” was the first chat show ever seen on Indian television. In all, the program ran for 21 years, from 1972 to 1993. The program, which was produced by Doordarshan Kendra Mumbai and included in-depth interviews with movie stars, was an instant hit. In addition, this led to work as a stage host and emcee. She also wrote many joke collections and oversaw the publication of Grihalaxmi, a magazine for women in Hindi, for a total of fifteen years.

In 1985, she directed her first feature film, Tum Par Hum Qurban, which she also wrote and produced.

She returned to the small screen as an actor in 2006, appearing in Pyaar Ke Do Naam: Ek Raadha, Ek Shyaam, produced by Rajshri Productions. Ek Raadha, Ek Shyaam was the name of the program.
She was featured in the Zee TV reality program Ladies Special, which featured stand-up comedy, back in 2009.

Tabassum has kept up her role as a TV interviewer, and she presently hosts Abhi Toh Main Jawaan Hoon, a TV Asia program in the United States and Canada that focuses on the Golden Age of Hindi Cinema. She now has a YouTube channel that she calls “Tabassum Talkies.” The videos on this channel range from personal reflections to conversations with celebrities to humorous shayaris and beyond.

Personal life

The television star Arun Govil has an elder brother named Vijay Govil, and Tabassum was married to him. Their son Hoshang Govil made his acting debut in the 1985 film Tum Par Hum Qurbaan, which Tabassum produced and directed. The film was the first time audiences saw Johnny Lever in a comedic role. There were three films he was in and he was in all of them. Films directed by J. Om Prakash include Kartoot (1987) and Ajeeb Dastaan Hai Yeah (1996). Zee TV is responsible for both of them (grandfather of Hrithik Roshan). Khushi, Hoshang’s daughter, and her granddaughter made her acting debut in the 2009 film Hum Phir Mile Na Mile.

Tabassum was hospitalized in November 2022 after suffering a heart attack. At the age of 78, she died away on November 18th, 2022.
