A Life Story of Sebastián Méndez
Jhegson Sebastián “Sebas” Méndez Carabal is a professional footballer born in Ecuador on April 26, 1997. He plays for Los Angeles FC of Major League Soccer and the Ecuador national team. The name “Sebas” is a nickname he goes by.
The Independent Club Career DV
In 2011, Méndez enrolled at the Independiente del Valle school. Later that year, in 2015, he made his first-team debut against L.D.UL.D.U. Loja in the Serie A Primera Etapa. He had previously played for the club’s reserve team in 2014. It was the seventh round of the tournament, and the game took place at Loja.
Having made two substitute appearances for his former club, Méndez was loaned to the Spanish club Cultural Leonesa. On November 29 November 29, 2015, Méndez made his debut for his new team after being called upon to replace another player.
Even after returning to the team, Méndez wasn’t eligible to play again until Week 15 of the 2016 campaign. Even though he was already back, they still waited. Next, on May 13, 2016, he played as a substitute in a losing match against Fuerza Amarilla.

City of Orlando Football Club
On December 28 December 28, 2018, Méndez inked a contract to join Orlando City of Major League Soccer. He made his debut on the home field on March 2 against New York City F.CF.C. As a member of the 2019 M.L.S.M.L.S. All-Star Skills Challenge champion Orlando City team, Méndez was honored in July. The Orlando City squad, which included Nani and Chris Mueller, defeated the M.L.S.M.L.S. All-Stars and the Atlético Madrid squads to win the tournament and the $25,000 prize.
Mendelez made his 65th appearance and scored his first goal for the club on November 7, 2021. The 20-yard knuckleball goal proved the game-winner as they went on to a 2-0 victory away at CF Montréal. It was the last regular season game, and Orlando knew a tie would guarantee them a spot in the M.L.S.M.L.S. Cup Playoffs in 2021.
L.A.F.C. – Los Angeles Football Club
On July 19 July 19, 2022, Los Angeles FC made a trade to acquire Méndez. Three hundred thousand dollars worth of General Allocation Funds were moved as part of the deal. Orlando is eligible for an additional $450,000 in G.A.M.G.A.M. if certain contract conditions are met. In addition, Orlando will keep a portion of any potential transfer fee that is not specified.
Career Opportunities Abroad
In 2017, Méndez was part of the Ecuadorian squad that played in the South American Under-20 Championship finals.
Manager Hernán Daro Gómez called Méndez up to the senior Ecuadorian national team for the first time in October 2018. That invitation came from Gómez to Méndez.
On September 11, 2018, he played his first professional game for Chicago against Guatemala at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Illinois. They beat Guatemala 2-0, with him playing 73 of 90 possible minutes.
He was awarded a spot on the squad to compete in the 2019 Copa América in May of that year. This would be his first international competition at the senior level.
Méndez, who had been rested for the group’s opening game, started against Chile and drew a foul from Chilean goalkeeper Gabriel Arias, leading to a penalty kick that Ecuador would win and convert for the team’s lone goal in a 2-1 loss.
He then started the next match, which ended in a tie with Japan. With a single point in Group C, last-place Ecuador was eliminated.
By June of 2021, Mendez had made it onto the final roster for the Copa América.
