Thursday was the first time that SpaceX’s massive new rocket was put through its paces during a test flight, but the mission was aborted only minutes after the rocket rose above the launch pad.
The goal of Elon Musk’s firm was to launch the approximately 400-foot-long (120-meter-long) Starship rocket on a voyage around the globe from the southernmost part of Texas, which is located close to the border with Mexico. It did not have any passengers or satellites on board, and both the launcher and the spacecraft that was sitting on top of it were intended to be dumped into the ocean.
