Video: Louisiana Tech student Austin Johnson killed in off-campus ‘accidental shooting,’ suspect arrested

An investigation is currently underway by the Ruston Police Department regarding a tragic shooting incident that resulted in the loss of a young life.

The victim, Austin Johnson, was an 18-year-old student at Louisiana Tech University hailing from Bossier Parish. The incident occurred on Friday, Feb. 2.

Reston police say early this morning, they responded to the reports of gunshots, a gunshot victim in the drive-thru of Canes. They say they found an 18-year-old suffering from a gunshot wound.

He was taken to the hospital and then airlifted to street ports, where police say he later died. Police identified him as Austin Johnson of Bolger City. Officers believe that Johnson was in a vehicle in the car with friends when he was shot accidentally.

Matthew Umbray is now in charge of negligence homicide. The investigation is ongoing.
