Joseph George Sutherland Biography

Nearly 40 years after he is said to have killed two women in Toronto, Joseph George Sutherland, now 61, has been arrested.

Erin Gilmour and Susan Tice were killed in their homes in downtown Toronto in 1983. On Monday, Toronto police said Sutherland’s DNA was linked to their deaths.

The person who is thought to have done it was on the run for almost 40 years until the Ontario Provincial Police caught up with Sutherland last Thursday.

The court has not found proof of the charges. So far, this is what we know about Sutherland.

Sutherland lived in Toronto at the time of the murders, but the police did not say if he knew anyone he was accused of killing.

Police said he wasn’t a suspect or a person of interest when the murders happened. While he was living in Toronto, the police never asked him anything.

Sutherland was arrested in Moosonee, Ontario, where he lived. Moosonee is a small northern town near James Bay, the southernmost point of Hudson Bay. It is about 850 kilometers north of Toronto.

The lead investigator on the case, Det. Sgt. Stephen Smith said Monday morning that Sutherland had moved around the province over the last 39 years, but he didn’t say where else he had lived.
Smith said that taking Sutherland into custody was “no problem.” He also said, “When you do these kinds of crimes, you’re just waiting for that knock on the door.”
Smith said that Sutherland does have a family and extended family and that they all live in northern Ontario. He wouldn’t say who they are, though.

Sutherland was arrested after police said they used genetic genealogy technology from U.S.-based company Othram Inc., a private lab that said it “helps investigators break through previously impenetrable forensic DNA barriers and close cases that couldn’t be solved before.”

Smith said, “It’s a snip test, which is a single nucleotide polymorphism. This lets us use the genes between the genes to connect families, and we can use this to use people who have uploaded their DNA to Family Tree DNA.”
Investigators found Sutherland in the end, and they gave him a DNA warrant. They said that tests showed that what was found at the murder scenes decades ago was the same.

The police said they would have never heard of Sutherland’s name without this technology.
Smith said that because Sutherland has lived in Ontario for 39 years since the murders, investigators will look into “every possible connection” to any other cold case.

He said that this case was probably the “most complicated” thing he had worked on in his 25 years as a Toronto police officer.

Smith said that Sutherland does live in northern Ontario with his family and extended family, but he wouldn’t say who they are.

Sutherland has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and is due in court on Dec. 9 at 2:00 p.m. at Old City Hall.
