When I was in my last year at the conservatory, we decided that we wanted to contribute something to make everyday life more beautiful to our local community. We got together and started to discuss.
After a few days of brainstorming, we decided that we wanted to do something to surprise the residents of a retirement home not far from the conservatory.
The retirement home is two streets away from the conservatory, right next to a small cafรฉ and the GGBet Casino. We have visited the home a couple of times a year to treat the residents with a good time. My colleagues Gus plays piano, Annabelle plays viola, Timothy plays flute and I play violin. We got together and gave mini-concerts for the residents of the retirement home ๐ถ. We usually scheduled our performances for the holidays.
They were always very happy for us, it was a pleasure to see how the music could move them. It was as if the generation gap had disappeared completely. We were united in our love for music. Usually, we would make an appointment with the director of the institution and then hold the house concert on the date and at the time we had set.
A spring of bold ideas
On a random spring day, I woke up tired of always playing the well-known classics. I wanted my friends and I to write our music for our next concert. This was easy to think up, of course, but harder to realize. Besides our conservatory classes and part-time jobs, we had to find time to write the music.
One of the residents, Uncle Jerry, played the saxophone when he was younger. His health and weak lungs no longer allowed it, but he was more than happy to help us in any way he could.
Uncle Jerry would often sneak out of the nursing home and pass the time playing the slot machines at >GGBet Casino. The staff at the nursing home panicked at first, even calling the police on one occasion because they didn’t know where the old man had disappeared. But this has been going on for so many years that I’m beginning to think that the carers are now simply turning a blind eye to Uncle Jerry’s shenanigans.
We had months of hard work ahead of us. We composed the melodies together, my colleagues and I worked late into the night to come up with ideas, and when Gus got tendonitis, he was always at our practices with a bandage on his hand, except for a few days. We had an incredibly strong team, and I’m grateful for the experience and that these people believed in me and didn’t hesitate to put in the hard work to make this idea happen.
The countdown has begun
Almost everything was done. We had written five music pieces, a total of forty-one minutes and twenty-six seconds. A real mini-concert ๐ต. The only thing missing was the perfect title. The individual pieces, although they required serious professional and artistic preparation, had an essentially cheerful atmosphere. It was intentional.
We didn’t want to bring sentimentality and nostalgia to the nursing home, but rather the joy and gratitude one feels for the present. To learn to rejoice in the present, not always worrying about the past or fearing what the future will bring. As that’s what we’ve tried to do with our music, the title should be equally relaxed and fun.
When I went to Jerry’s the other day, I saw an advertisement in the window of GGBet Casino: Najlepsze oferty! I can’t miss it, I thought to myself, and for some reason, I went in. As if I knew Jerry was there, he was gambling. He wasn’t surprised at all. I sat down next to him, watched him play, and then joined in for a few rounds.
Jerry wasn’t feeling well, coughing, his face was pale, and his hands tired. Always cheerful, energetic, and cheeky, Jerry now looked tired. He said he’d lived enough, done all he wanted to do in this life, he was ready to rest for good. But not to worry, he said, he would wait for our concert.
At that moment, the title of our concert came to my mind: Najlepsze oferty ๐ผ! It will be unmissable. We still have a week and a half to perfect the whole thing, we have enough time to practice. And so we did. We practiced every single day until the day of the concert. Nobody except the management of the nursing home and Jerry knew about the concert, it was a huge surprise for the rest.
We played flawlessly, it was one of the most defining experiences of my life and one I will never forget. The residents of the home applauded us for a long time.
Jerry sat in the front row. Despite our best efforts to compose and play cheerful music, by the middle of the concert, Jerry’s tired face was streaming with tears. I had never seen him cry before. I didn’t even know Uncle Jerry could cry. Now I know how important it was for him to help us prepare.
Since then, I’ve come to believe that music is the strongest bond between man and man, soul and soul โจ.
