The Madras High Court has appointed Lekshmana Chandra Victoria Gowri as Additional Judge. Before she was given this position, she was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and served as a lawmaker.
Lawyers accused her of having issued hate speeches against religious minorities, and they petitioned the Supreme Court of India to rescind the appointment, but they were unsuccessful. Her nomination sparked controversy, and the dispute marred it.
Education
Gowri attended Mother Teresa Women’s University for her graduate studies after completing her undergraduate degree in law at Government Law College in Madurai. Gowri has a Bachelor of Laws degree.
Politics
Gowri’s family has a long history of involvement with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which dates back many decades. Since she was in college, she has been actively involved in Seva Bharati, which is a Sangh Parivar-related affiliate organization. Gowri led the Women’s Wing of the party in Kerala in October 2010. In 2016, she was elected National Secretary of the women’s wing within the organization. According to ThePrint, Gowri’s social media site has images of her tying rakhi on Narendra Modi and other top BJP politicians; she participated in the Main Bhi Chowkidar campaign during the 2019 Indian general election.
